What is colic in babies? 

Colic in babies is the constant crying, fussing, or screaming for several hours a day, with no apparent cause for the upset. It generally occurs between 6 pm and midnight and can be accompanied by a distended belly, clenched fists, and inability to pass gas easily. 

How to soothe a colic baby? 

A colic baby can be soothed through multiple methods, and each baby may require different treatment. Some breastfeeding mothers may find that a change in their diet; cutting out dairy, soy, and other foods can help ease bub's digestive system. While others may look at introducing a herbal or medical supplement (like Colic Tea or Probiotics) to help settle bub's digestive discomfort. Finally, other methods include warm baths, 'colic massages,' and feeding in a more upright position to help pass the gas. 

How Long Does Colic Last? 

Colic typically starts to peak within babies from around 6 weeks of age and will usually go away from 3 to 4 months of age. Most babies will significantly improve after this time, and by 5 months, their colic should evaporate. 

What Causes Colic in Babies? 

The cause of Colic is unfortunately unknown. Many suggest that it may be due to bub's immaturity of their bowels and small intestine. Others suggest it is due to food intolerances, allergies, or that it may simply be gas or wind that's unable to be passed.

How do I know if my baby (newborn) has colic? 

To identify colic in your baby, there are several things to look for, these include; Excessive crying or screaming (as if they are in pain). Predictable timing of the outbursts and episodes, typically at night to early morning. Facial discoloring, such as skin flushing or blushed cheeks. Body tension; of stiffened legs, arms, and clenched fists can also be a sign of colic. 

Why does Colic happen at night? 

One theory for the reason colicky babies are more unsettled at night is that serotonin level peaks in the evening. This imbalance is supposed to cause colic. It is not until the baby starts making melatonin, which relaxes the intestinal muscle.

Aniseed - The actions of this herb are carminative and anti-spasmodic and a galactagogue that supports normal lactation. It is used to ease griping, intestinal colic and flatulence (wind). Its major indications for use are colic, especially in children, indigestion and lack of appetite. It has other health benefits, containing a range of minerals, including iron. It is high in antioxidants and so can reduce inflammation.

Caraway - Caraway’s actions are carminative, anti-spasmodic and galactagogue. It is a calming herb used to ease flatulence and colic, especially in children. Like Aniseed, it can also stimulate the appetite. Great for irritable bowel. It also has beneficial flavonoid antioxidants and a wide range of minerals. The seeds are a storehouse for Vitamins A, E, C and B vitamins

Nettle - is often included in a herbal blend because of its long history of use as a ‘tonic’ or strengthening herb, especially after childbirth, and for its iron content. Nettles are a widely applicable plant to use for strengthening and support. It also has traditional use as a galactagogue.

Fennel - Fennel’s actions are carminative, anti-spasmodic and galactagogue. Its major indications for use are for relieving colic and flatulence, especially in infants, with the added benefit of stimulating digestion and appetite. All parts of the Fennel plant are rich in powerful anti-inflammatory polyphenol antioxidants which benefit health and other important nutrients like Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Manganese.

Cinnamon Chips – Cinnamon’s actions are warming, carminative and digestive. It is traditionally used to support healthy digestion, ease bloating and reduce gas. Its warming properties help stimulate circulation and can provide comfort in cases of intestinal discomfort. Cinnamon is also rich in antioxidants, which support overall health and help reduce inflammation.
